What’s going around:  Environmental allergies / Hayfever, Pink Eye, Influenza A & B, Covid, & Strep Throat

Medical Minute:  Food Allergy Awareness Week - “This week is a dedicated time to raise awareness about food allergies and anaphylaxis, encouraging everyone to become more knowledgeable and understanding of this potentially life-threatening condition.”

An estimated 1 in 13 children (8%), or 2 students per classroom, are affected with food allergies.

A few Key Reminders from Allergy and Asthma network on how you can help:

  • Become a food allergy aware. Take this time to boost your knowledge and learn all you can about food allergies! Get detailed info on symptoms, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of food allergies. You can also learn about the different types of food allergies and how they can affect people differently.

  • Become a Master at reading food labels: Label reading can be tricky because some food allergens are listed under different names or within ingredients. Understanding the basics can help you identify foods you can safely eat. Learn what to check for when looking for common food allergens!

  • Know what to do when a reaction does occur - Webinar June 12th register here Anaphylaxis: The Changing Treatment Landscape

  • Be prepared: Epi First. Epi Fast. Learn how to properly use epinephrine — either an epinephrine autoinjector or nasal spray. It can save a life during anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction that requires timely treatment with epinephrine

  • Share resources: Learn about food insecurity and why it is more common in people with food allergies. Find out about nationwide and local food pantries, food banks and other nutrition assistance resources and share the information in your community.

Other resources: Food FARE (Food Allergy Research & Education) ,  Allergy and Asthma Network, Kids with Food Allergies, American Academy of Pediatrics Asthma & Allergies,USDA Food Allergies
